Patents

Patents are a form of intellectual property directed to an invention memorialized in a document issued by a government (e.g., the United States) to an inventor or their assignee (e.g., employer) granting exclusive rights for a limited period of time in exchange for public disclosure of the invention. The exclusive rights granted by most governments are directed to preventing others from making, using, selling or distributing the patented invention without permission from the patent owner.
